Vera Neumann

Years ago when I was walking down a street I found a scarf on the ground. It was beautiful silk with a lovely pattern, in perfect condition. I wasn’t the scarf wearing type (still more a bandana girl), but it was too pretty not to keep and there wasn’t exactly a lost and found I could take it to.

I later discovered, upon closer inspection, it was a Vera Neumann design. She was a renowned textile artist popular throughout the later half of the midcentury. At the time my of this discovery my interest in surface patterns was pretty much limited to shopping, and definitely not creating them myself. Now I find her a huge source of inspiration. Our styles don’t completely align but I love her use of bold color and line drawing.

There’s no shortage of vintage specimens on Etsy, including from what looks like to be an official Vera Nuemann storefront. And if you’re sure if the scarf you have your eye on is a reproduction or original, and it matters to you, I found this handy guide over on Tumblr.
